Frederick Hertzberg: Two Factor theory

  - Theory based on the contents of interviews conducted on 200 engineers and accountants
  - viewpoint of employees motivation for successful management
  - There are two sets of needs/factors:
Hygiene Factor:
  - Also known as dissatisfiers or maintenance factors
  - The presence of these factors doesn’t motivate employees, but absence causes dissatisfaction
  - Needed for maintaining a minimum level of need satisfaction
  Factors:
  * company policy  * supervision  * salary 
  * relationship with supervisor  * personal life
  * working conditions  * relationship with peers

  * relationship with subordinates  * job security, status etc.
Motivating Factor:
  - Known as motivators/satisfiers/job content factors
  - Job centered and related to the job directly
  - The presence of these factors causes high level of motivation and job satisfaction
  - Absence causes dissatisfaction
  Factors:
  * achievement  * recognition  * advancement 
  * work itself  * possibility of personal growth
  * responsibility etc.
Analysis of theory:
  - Identified the role of human elements in organization
  - Recognized the quality of leadership as important factor for the success of management
  - Emphasized on non-financial rewards
  - Greatly emphasized the role of individual psychology and group behavior for organizational effectiveness
  - Emphasized the self- direction of subordinates through workers’ participation in planning and decision making
  - Neglects the economic dimension of job satisfaction
  - Not considered situational variables
  - Views management as nothing but applied behavioral science
  - A clinical bias and lacks scientific validity
